FRIDAY NIGHT FILMS

Each month, local film expert Erika Pfander selects phenomenal films, with an emphasis on classics, independent, and foreign films around a monthly theme to show in Room 200 of the Academy Building, generously supported by Friends of the Thomaston Public Library. Light refreshments are served. 

Friday Night Films are open to the public and free of charge, but donations are gratefully accepted. The Thomaston Academy Building is handicapped accessible from the rear entrance. For more information, contact the library at (207) 354-2453 or programs@thomaston.lib.me.us.

March 2020 - Literary Adaptations

1949 Little Women Film PosterThe March sisters — Meg (Janet Leigh), Jo (June Allyson), Beth (Margaret O’Brien) and Amy (Elizabeth Taylor) — struggle to make ends meet in their New England household while their father is away fighting in the Civil War. Despite harsh times, they cling to optimism, often with neighbor Laurie (Peter Lawford) as a companion. As they mature, they face burgeoning ambitions and relationships, as well as tragedy, all the while maintaining their unbreakable bond.

1935 Anna Karenina Film posterThis rendering of author Leo Tolstoy’s classic stars Greta Garbo as the married Russian woman who falls in love and runs off with dashing soldier Vronsky (Fredric March). Upon Anna’s return, her icy and distant husband (Basil Rathbone) prevents her from seeing her son (Freddie Bartholomew). To make matters worse, Vronsky deserts her to join a regiment heading to the Turkish-Serbian war. Garbo is unforgettable. Her final scene is haunting.

Reunited with his first love (Jean Simmons), the beautiful but emotionally cold Estella, and his childhood patron, Miss Havisham (Martita Hunt) he discovers that the elderly spinster has gone mad from having been left at the altar as a young woman, and has made her charge, Estella, into a warped heartbreaker.
